The Phoenix Youth Group.
The Phoenix Youth Group in it’s current form has been running for 8 years now and is building a reputation for itself for producing high quality productions here at The Phoenix Theatre and is helping to gain and nurture some very talented young actors in it’s midst. This year will be our 12th main scale production performed at the theatre (October 2017) and we have also showcased our talents at The Courtyard One Act Play Festival over the past three years, where we have been successful in gaining awards and achievements over three consecutive years. 2016 saw us also competing at The Swan Theatre, Worcester as part of the One Act Play competition and we are particularly proud of our cast and crew members and special thanks should go to Brian Jackson for his direction on this project. The youth group is run by a brilliant team of experienced volunteer helpers, and is lead by Sarah O’Neill – the youth group leader.
The theatre is very proud of the youth group and this is very much a part of the future of the theatre and the generations of performers and visitors we can expect to see at our thriving and very much alive theatre. The youth group takes part in lots of events at the theatre as well as the Youth Group main scale show each year and some of our members regularly appear in the adult productions as and when there is a need.
The youth group currently meets every Sunday afternoon (term time) throughout the year and there is a once a year intake during November where those who are interested in joining us are invited to attend an audition. An audition piece is to be prepared and then successful members are invited to join the company for the period of a year. During this year, the youth group members will be involved in various performances as well as working towards the main scale show performed by the youth group in October each year.
The current PYT company has over 25 members, and we have just completed a wonderful mid year showcase event, (march 2017) which was a huge success. We performed six play extracts which had such an array of talent and material, and gave everyone a chance to shine. The audience saw newly published play by acclaimed play writers, to original writings by PYT adult members themselves, all of which showcased the talents of our PYT performer. Their age range is from 8 to 22 and so varied and vast in it’s depth and range. There was definitely something for everyone to see in this year’s showcase event which was very well supported.
PYT Auditions for October 2017/18 intake.
Auditions for the next new intake of the group will be held on Sunday 5th November from 2 – 5pm at The Phoenix Theatre. A 1 – 2 min piece is to be prepared prior to the audition. The play we will be performing in October 2018 is yet to be decided! To download an Audition pack click HERE.

Showcase March 2017 Review.
What an afternoon we have had! The range of talent on display is simply amazing. And I have had fresh inspiration watching you perform, creating a variety of scenes and dramas in front of ‘blacks’. As ever the soundscapes created by Chantal (and Hannah) were absolutely right for each of the plays we saw. The success of PYT is underlined by the fresh talent you continue to attract and nurture, and there they were, all ages in a variety of characters and guises, playing with confidence and maturity. Our congratulations to everyone in the wonderful PYT company.
We were delighted to see the boundaries being pushed, with Katie writing and directing her surreal showpiece ‘The Next Stop Is…’; Julie breaking the bounds with her play ‘Defrosted’. And finally the collaboration of Sam, Owen and Adam in ‘The Man at the Window’ beautifully directed by Sam with pace and delicacy combined. I do believe this play deserves to be developed a little further for the HCDF. It could be a prizewinner.
Congratulations to everyone.

Other Drama Opportunities for the Youth Sector at the theatre.
Full scale productions and the commitment of extra rehearsals is not everyone’s cup of tea, which is why here at the theatre we can offer an alternative for the youth sector. We allow a private company (also run by our current Phoenix Youth Group Leader) to hire our space five times a week to offer drama classes to all children aged 5 – 18+ years. The Drama Company offers drama classes for every child who wants to experience drama in a fun, creative and stimulating environment. They also run holiday workshops during the Summer holidays and Easter holidays. If you are interested in finding out more, then please contact The Drama Company Leader Sarah O’Neill: 07814 624417 or email: email@example.com.
