PYT Information

The Phoenix Youth Group.

The Phoenix Youth Group in it’s current form has been running for 9 years now and is building a reputation for itself for producing high quality productions here at The Phoenix Theatre and is helping to gain and nurture some very talented young actors in it’s midst. This year, we are putting on not one but two main scale productions, which will be our 13th main scale production performed at the theatre (October 2018). We continue to showcase our talents also at the Herefordshire County Drama Festival where we have been successful in gaining awards and achievements having performed at The Courtyard in Hereford and The Swan in Worcester over the past three years and now soon to be competing at Ledbury Market Theatre in March too. Our March Showcase production also continues to go from strength to strength, particularly with so many new young members joining us for our 2017/2018 intake. The youth group is run by a brilliant team of experienced volunteer helpers and is lead by Sarah O’Neill – the youth group leader.

The theatre is very proud of the youth group and this is very much a part of the future of the theatre and the generations of performers and visitors we can expect to see at our thriving and very much alive theatre. The youth group takes part in lots of events at the theatre as well as the Youth Group main scale show each year and some of our members regularly appear in the adult productions as and when there is a need.

The youth group currently meets every Sunday afternoon (term time) throughout the year and there is a once a year intake during November where those who are interested in joining us are invited to attend an audition. An audition piece is to be prepared and then successful members are invited to join the company for the period of a year. During this year, the youth group members will be involved in various performances as well as working towards the main scale show performed by the youth group in October each year.

The current PYT company has over 25 members with an age range from 8 to 18. Having spent our first few weeks before Christmas getting to know our fantastic new members through team building games and activities, we are now well into rehearsals for our Showcase production happening very soon, which for some, will be their very first experience of performing in such a wonderful live theatre venue. This year we will showcase four short plays and extracts, including one original piece written by our assistant group leader and stage manager, Julie Church. This performance will be for an invited audience of parents, friends and family wishing to come and support the youth in their wonderful show.

Productions for 2018

As our youth group continues to grow in numbers and in talent, we have taken the decision to present to the public this year not one, but two main scale productions this October. The first is ‘The Railway Children’ by E. Nesbit and the second will be ‘Goodnight Mr Tom’ by David Wood and we hope to treat our audiences with these war time favourites, showcasing our spectacular young talent in double volume! Tickets will be on sale from September onwards.

Showcase Review (March 2017)

What an afternoon we have had! The range of talent on display is simply amazing. And I have had fresh inspiration watching you perform, creating a variety of scenes and dramas in front of ‘blacks’. As ever the soundscapes created by Chantal (and Hannah) were absolutely right for each of the plays we saw. The success of PYT is underlined by the fresh talent you continue to attract and nurture, and there they were, all ages in a variety of characters and guises, playing with confidence and maturity. Our congratulations to everyone in the wonderful PYT company.
We were delighted to see the boundaries being pushed, with Katie writing and directing her surreal showpiece ‘The Next Stop Is…’; Julie breaking the bounds with her play ‘Defrosted’. And finally the collaboration of Sam, Owen and Adam in ‘The Man at the Window’ beautifully directed by Sam with pace and delicacy combined. I do believe this play deserves to be developed a little further for the HCDF. It could be a prizewinner.
Congratulations to everyone.
